9. What about aftercare?
What to expect: Your tattoo will take about 2 weeks to heal. It will be tender to the touch for the first few days. Around day 3 to 5 it will begin to flake and may appear crusty. During this period the tattoo may look ugly and it may seem that the ink is falling out. Don’t worry, this is normal. The last stage is when the tattoo looks healed but is still waxy or shiny on the surface. The directions below should be followed until the tattoo is fully healed. Leave the tattoo bandaged for at least 2 hours but up to 12 hours. After you've removed the bandage do not reapply.   After removing the bandage, gently wash the area with fragrance-free soap and water, making sure to remove any built up blood, ink, or ointment. Air dry your new tattoo or gently pat dry with a clean towel only. Never scrub, scratch, or pick at your tattoo during the healing process. During the first 2 weeks wash your tattoo 2 to 3 times a day. Apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor after washing your tattoo and gently rub it in like lotion. During this time your tattoo may peel and flake. This is a normal part of the healing process.  Do’s and Don’ts: 1) You can shower as normal. However, for the 2-week healing period do not submerge or soak your tattoo in any way. No swimming, hot tubs, or saunas. It will interfere with healing and may cause infections and scarring. 2) Do not expose your tattoo to direct sunlight for the 2-week period. Keep it covered with clothing. 3) Do not pick at the tattoo! Let any scabs that might form to fall off naturally. No scratching, rubbing the tattoo in any manner.
